On Page Optimization

Making SEO changes to your web site files.

On page optimization refers to modifications made to the HTML code of your web site pages. The search engines add weight to several on page factors including the keywords in your page title, meta keywords, meta description and your actual page content. They also look at your HTML code for errors and missing details. Since on page factors are relatively easy to modify, Windhill Design starts it’s SEO campaigns with these changes.

Your title tag, the title that shows up in the blue bar at the top of your browser, is one of the quickest SEO changes you can make to improve your rankings. Many web sites have the company name or something like, “Home Page” in the as the page title. Unless your business is very well known in the off line word, most people will not be searching by your company name or the words “Home Page”. Therefore, placing keywords in your page title, you’re increasing the chances that people searching for those words will find you.

Everyone has heard about META tags, right? Meta tags typically refer to two lines of non-visible code in a web page. One that lists keywords and the other that lists a description of the page. In the early days of SEO, META tags carried more weight but as more people abused the use of META tags, search engines put less weight on these lines of code.

Another big part of on page optimization includes modifying the text or copy that is visible to your visitors. We want to use your keywords in the text to increase it’s relevance but not make the page read unnaturally. Most SEO marketing firms aim for between 3-5% keyword density. Many web pages do not have very much text so it may be a good idea to generate more copy.

Other on page factors include revising your site’s navigation so it’s easier for search engines to ‘spider’ your web site and to ‘clean up’ your site’s code so it is more streamlined and doesn’t have a lot of extra code to saturate your keyword density.

These are just a few of the on page optimization factors that Windhill Design looks at when optimizing your web site.
